In the hands of veteran director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf...), tough story elements and character development seemed effortless. A man who had already created a number of bonafide 1960's Classics, Nichols made a daring, ambitious attempt to make a Modern Classic with Closer (2004). With each shot carefully composed, the film is a work of cinematic art. The cast is excellent. Especially Natalie Portman, who made the brave transition away from the "downy innocent" characters she usually plays. Portman is still proving herself to be one of the best younger actresses out there today, and with Closer, it is great to see one of the turning points in her development.
