Sin City (2005): Rodriguez and Tarantino Bring Frank Miller's Graphic Vision to Life


     Graphic novelist Frank Miller grew disenchanted with Hollywood adaptations after several bad experiences over the years. With that feeling in mind, Miller was hesitant to release the film rights to his "Sin City" series when director Robert Rodriguez began courting for them. In response, Rodriguez shot a test scene for Sin City (2005) which so impressed Miller that he immediately agreed and the scene served as the opening of the film. Miller signed on as co-director and Quentin Tarantino was hired as a guest director for one segment. Full of raw visual style, Sin City is unique in it's clever and creative use of a digital backlot... meaning most of the film was shot with the actors against a green background and everything else was added by computer graphics later on. The black and white format, with subtle and selective hints of color is amazing. As a result of this technique, the film makers were able to come up with an aesthetic look that was comparatively similar to the actual drawn images in the Graphic Novels.
     The film contains four story parts:
     "The Customer is Always Right" concerns The Salesman (Josh Hartnett) who kills and steals from vulnerable women...

     "The Hard Goodbye" is about a weathered ex-con named Marv (Mickey Rourke) who awakens to find that the prostitute he loves (Jaime King) has been murdered beside him...
