Apocalypto (2006): Mel Gibson's Mayan Epic

Co-written and directed by Mel Gibson, Apocalypto (2006) is a rare cinematic Gem. With Gibson's great eye for period detail in historic Epics, and set during the decline of the Mayan civilization, the film's dialogue is spoken in Yucatec Maya. The story focuses on a tribesman's journey to escape human sacrifice, after he is abducted and his village annihilated, and his desperate running attempt to return to his family. The cinematography is amazing and the pyramid sets are breathtaking. Historians and archaeologists were consulted, giving a true and heart-pounding air of authenticity to the events. The violence can be extreme, but it suits the subject matter well. The actors are great as well, including Rudy Youngblood and Raoul Trujillo.

Braveheart (1995): Mel Gibson as William Wallace, with Sophie Marceau

Directed, produced and starring Mel Gibson, and written by Randall Wallace, Braveheart (1995) earned high honors at the Academy Awards that year and remains one of the greatest epic period-war films ever made... serving as a template for many historical films to follow. Magnificent in scope, the story focuses on 13th Century Scottish hero, William Wallace, and the Scots' battle with ruthless England for freedom. The cinematography is crisp, the bloody battles scenes are graphic and the direction is impeccable. Costume and set designers did their jobs well, creating a palpable feel of archaeological and historical authenticity. Braveheart will surely be considered Mel Gibson's masterpiece. The sweeping musical score is uplifting and poignant. The cast is great including Mel Gibson as William Wallace, Sophie Marceau (who is absolutely stunning) as the princess, Patrick McGoohan as King Edward "The Longshanks", Brendan Gleeson and Catherine McCormack.
