Directed by Richard Lester, and written by James Goldman, Robin and Marian (1976) marked the lovely Audrey Hepburn's return to film after an absence of eight years. The Medieval period story, set after the Crusades, finds an aging Robin Hood returning to England to try to win back the heart of Maid Marian one last time. Good attention to historic detail and powerful chemistry between the actors make for an all-around enjoyable experience. Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn are great in the title roles. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, including Robert Shaw and Richard Harris.
Directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) is considered by many to be amongst the most entertaining films ever made. Set in 1191 A.D., the swashbuckling story centers on a Saxon lord who fights back after the evil Prince John oppresses the masses while King Richard is away in the Holy Land, off battling in the Crusades. Full of action, the film has added dazzling aesthetics with early vivid Technicolor. Errol Flynn delivers one of the best performances of his career as Sir Robin of Locksley, also known as Robin Hood. Olivia de Havilland is lovely as the Lady, Maid Marian. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, including Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone.
