3:10 to Yuma (2007): Russell Crowe and Christian Bale

Directed by James Mangold, and based on the story by Elmore Leonard, 3:10 to Yuma (2007) is a remake of the 1957 Classic of the same title. The story focuses on a desperate rancher who agrees to transport a captured outlaw to a train bound for Yuma prison... and the dangers he faces as a result. This modern twist pays homage to the original film by keeping much of the dialogue intact. It does, however, breath new life into the story as well... with gritty action and character developments. 3:10 to Yuma is tense from beginning to end, and worth the time. The cast is great, including Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, Ben Foster, Luke Wilson and Gretchen Mol.

L.A. Confidential (1997): Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pierce

Masterfully directed and co-written by Curtis Hanson, L.A. Confidential (1997) cruises across the screen seamlessly, in a stylish homage to the Film Noir Classics. Where the film differs from it's predecessors, however, is in aesthetics. Shot in vibrant color with mostly with available light, the film has a more naturalistic tone than the typical, dramatically photographed black-and-white Noir. The casting in L.A. Confidential was daring as well, with Hanson choosing two Australian actors, Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce, who were relatively unknown in the U.S. at that time, for the lead roles. It all worked out and a wonderful supporting cast joined on, including Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, Dany DeVito, David Strathairn... and Kim Basinger, who won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as a Veronica Lake look-a-like prostitute.
The story concerns the era of police corruption in the LAPD, intertwined with Hollywood celebrity after the incarceration of gangster Mickey Cohen left a vacancy in organized crime in Los Angeles in 1953. We meet several key characters:
including Detective Sgt. Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), who has teamed with tabloid reporter Sid Hudgens (Danny DeVito), for some tips and pay-offs, and headline-grabbing fame...

The Quick and the Dead (1995): Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Gene Hackman

Although The Quick and the Dead (1995) tanked at the box office upon it's release, it has come to be a lasting Cult film over the years, for a number of reasons. For one, it both re-imagined and revived the context in which Western films are viewed... having much in common with it's forbears, but also looking ahead with a fresh approach. For another, it provided a good springboard and showcase for lesser known stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Gene Hackman, of course, is always a great villain. Most importantly, it served to be the strongest effort and performance by underrated talent Sharon Stone. Serving as both co-producer and star of The Quick and the Dead, Stone held a lot of sway over important decisions... such as choosing the director. Her choice of Sam Raimi was perfect, with his style combining a good balance of homage and originality. For Stone herself, the part of "the Lady" would come to personify much of her own self image. It is certainly amongst her most powerful roles and ranks up in the annals of Western Film History. True West Magazine recently named her character, "The Lady", #1 on their list of bad-ass female gunslingers.
A gun-toting, sexy beauty known only as "The Lady" (Sharon Stone) rides into the town of Redemption...

The Mummy (2017): Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella as Princess Ahmanet

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy (2017) is a superb reboot of the classic Universal Studios Monster franchise with a modern twist. While digging a subway tunnel in London, workers discover the underground mausoleum of crusading Knights Templar, containing a secret that leads to the discovery of the hidden and cursed tomb of Princess Ahmanet in the faraway desert. Ancient Egyptian flare mixes with great CGI effects to form an entertaining spectacle. The cast does great job, including Tom Cruise in the lead role, Sofia Boutella as Princess Ahmanet, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe.
