The latest issue of the Scottish Rite Journal (September/October, 2021) was just published.

My regular contribution of “Chips from the Quarry” is on page 16. This one focuses on Bestselling authors and Freemasonry. The text was written by S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC.

This issue is also my first byline as a 33° (cool to see it in print)

Travis Simpkins Joins Scottish Rite Journal as Artist for "Chips from the Quarry"

Scottish Rite Journal. July/August 2021. Chips from the Quarry. Art by Travis Simpkins
Scottish Rite Journal. July/August 2021. Chips from the Quarry. Art by Travis Simpkins

Earlier this year, S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC offered me a regular spot in the Scottish Rite Journal, taking over the long-running “Chips from the Quarry” feature in the magazine (the previous artist, a Brother from Canada, has retired). The first issue to include my artwork (July/August 2021) was just published. Each “Chips from the Quarry” feature will have a different theme, this one is about Clergymen who were Masons.

It’s always a pleasure to help out and work with my friends in the Southern Jurisdiction. I have enjoyed the SJ’s various publications since becoming a Mason. I’ve contributed artwork to the Scottish Rite Research Society’s periodicals and the newly revived Masonic Book Club. It will be a fun adventure to be involved with the Scottish Rite Journal as well.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the pleasure to work with S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC on several projects. I consider it a great privilege that my time as a Mason has coincided with that of a man so knowledgeable and dedicated to the Craft. Best wishes to Brent on his retirement from the Supreme Council, 33°, SJ!

It’s not farewell, though. I’m looking forward to more collaborations with Brent in future post-retirement endeavors.

Supreme Council, 33°, SJ. House of the Temple Acquires Six Works by Travis Simpkins

Supreme Council, 33°, SJ. Scottish Rite. House of the Temple. Art by Travis Simpkins

I am pleased that these six charcoal drawings now have a permanent home at the House of the Temple in Washington, DC as part of the collection of the Supreme Council, 33°, Southern Jurisdiction. It truly is the ideal place for these works. It's an honor for me knowing that my art will be used to illustrate the history of the Scottish Rite and be preserved for posterity in such a noble edifice.
Special thanks to Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC for all of their contributions to the Craft and for the continued support on my circuitous journey.

Scottish Rite Journal Reports on Art by Travis Simpkins in Current Issue

Scottish Rite Journal. Southern Jurisdiction. Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Art by Travis Simpkins
Scottish Rite Journal. Southern Jurisdiction. Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Art by Travis Simpkins

Thanks to the Scottish Rite Journal SJ for reporting on my artwork in the latest issue (July/August, 2018), printed in the section regarding news from the NMJ. It's doubly meaningful for me to see the work shared by both the Northern and Southern Jurisdictions.

The 200th Anniversary graveside memorial to M.W. Paul Revere in Boston, overseen by M.W. Paul F. Gleason (Grand Master of Massachusetts), is nicely featured on that page as well.
