Co-written, produced and directed by Peter Jackson, based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) is the second installment in the Hobbit Trilogy. The story picks up where the first film left off, with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf leading a small group of determined dwarves on a quest to reclaim their treasure-filled homeland from the sinister dragon Smaug. Fantasy, magic and mysticism blend with veiled allusions to medieval historical elements… particularly in set design and the arms and armor. The CGI effects and animation work are astounding… a great achievement. The whole cast is wonderful, including Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Scott, James Nesbit and Benedict Cumberbatch providing the voice of Smaug the Dragon and the Dark Lord Sauron.
