Directed by Jonathan Newman, based on the novel "Mariah Mundi" by G.P. Taylor, The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box (2014) is intended to be the first film in a Steampunk franchise. In the Victorian-era, a teen is forced to partner-up with a bizarre stranger after his parents and younger brother are kidnapped at the British Museum. The boy, Mariah Mundi, finds his way to a steam-powered Hotel with miraculous healing waters that are believed to be enriched by an ancient golden Midas Box that provides infinite power to whomever possesses it. The museum scenes are interesting, and include reference-shots of the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. The whole film is beautifully photographed, and the visuals are stunning. The cast does a great job, including Michael Sheen, Sam Neill, Lena Headey, Ioan Gruffudd, Keeley Hawes, Tristan Gemmill and Aneurin Barnard.
