Directed by Peter Jackson, based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) is the the third installment in the Hobbit trilogy… itself a chronological precursor to the Lord of the Rings saga. The story begins with the defeat of the evil dragon Smaug and the recapture of of the treasure-filled Lonely Mountain. But Bilbo Baggins' dwarf companions soon instigate an epic war with the Elves and Orcs when Thorin is consumed by a cursed and paranoid greed. The special effects and animated scenes are dazzling and the sweeping battle scenes are action-packed and well-composed. Like the other films in the series, the look and feel (particularly with sets, arms and armor) is touched with a historical sense, full of medieval and Celtic undertones. The cast does a great job reprising their roles, including Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Richard Armitage as Thorin, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Ian Holm, Ken Scott, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee and Hugo Weaving.
