Co-written and directed by Terry Gilliam, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) is a pure visual delight and a veritable Cult Classic. The fantasy story follows the adventures of the tall-tale weaving Baron and a young girl sidekick as they try to gather support and help save a town from an invading army. Mythological subjects, historical overtones, action sequences and creative special effects keep the screen alive and exciting. John Neville is terrific as the Baron in a late career role. Young Sarah Polley is great as his child companion. Uma Thurman is a radiant and lovely goddess, displaying her form as Botticelli's Venus emerging from a sea shell. The supporting cast is great as well, including Robin Williams, Eric Idle, Jonathan Pryce and Oliver Reed.
