Renoir (2012): Female Beauty and Artistic Inspiration

Directed by Gilles Bourdos, Renoir (2012) was a critical success, earning both praise and numerous award nominations. The story concerns the final years in the life of Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir during World War I… when a young, free-spirited girl named Andree Heuschling (who later went by the stage name Catherine Hessling) becomes his nude model. Andree also becomes the lover of Renoir's son, Jean, who would go on to success as a filmmaker. Lush, vibrant hues are reflected in both the cinematography and the recreated Renoir paintings (which are quite good). Michel Bouquet is wonderful as the aging Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Christa Theret is beautiful and sultry as Andree Heuschling. Vincent Rottiers is great as Jean Renoir. A fantastic effort all-around.
