Full of Renaissance-era Art History, Inferno is Dan Brown's fourth novel to feature his intriguing protagonist, Robert Langdon, Harvard University Professor and Cryptologist. As the title suggests, the plot centers around an urgent mystery involving clues related to Dante Alighieri's masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. Divided into three cantos (Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso), the epic poem describe's Dante's descent into Hell and ultimate salvation in Paradise.
In the story, Robert Langdon awakens in a Florence, Italy hospital room with a bullet scrape on his head and no recollection of how he got there. After escaping an assassin and soldiers, Langdon and his new friend, Dr. Sienna Brooks, discover a bizarre artifact amongst his belongings… a device that holds the secret to a Dante-obsessed madman's bold plot to battle world overpopulation through a genetically engineered plague.
Robert Langdon and Sienna Brooks follow clues and evade capture while passing through some of the most treasured and historically-significant buildings of Florence, Venice and Istanbul… including the Palazzo Vecchio, Il Duomo, Porta Romana, Boboli Gardens, the Hall of the Five Hundred, the Church of Dante, the Baptistery of San Giovanni and Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, St. Mark's Basilica, Hagia Sophia and Yerebatan Sarayi. Glimpses of renowned artworks like Sandro Botticelli's Map of Hell, Michelangelo's David and Giorgio Vasari's Battaglia di Marciano lead to the discovered theft of the plaster death mask of Dante Alighieri himself.
While rich in art and adventure, the one missing aspect of the story (which was present in the other Langdon novels) is the intriguing element of a Secret Society at work. Nevertheless, Inferno makes for an enjoyable literary respite, and it's screen adaptation will surely become a hit film when production commences.
