Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008): Ancient Aliens and El Dorado
Nearly twenty years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), creator George Lucas, director Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford decided they'd like to revisit some of the fun they had while making the "Indiana Jones" movies in the 1980's. The fact that Harrison Ford had aged two decades was taken into account while coming up with a suitable story. The previous films left off in the late 1930's, so the new film would have to take place in the late 1950's. While the other films payed tribute to the serials of the 1930's and 1940's, the new film would be inspired by the B-Movie Sci-Fi of the 1950's. The story centers around the crystal skull of an Ancient Alien, taken from the mythical lost Mayan city of El Dorado in the 16th Century… a city rumored to have an incalculable wealth of gold. Dr. Jones and his cohorts must return the skull to it's proper place. The journey is fast-paced with truck chases, mummies of Spanish Conquistadors and shootouts with Soviet military who want the treasure for themselves. The concept of Ancient Alien influence on Pre-Columbian culture is a fascinating and popular subject. The recreation of Mayan art and antiquities is well done within the set design. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) does it's best to stay true to the look of the older films, using real stuntmen, but the advances in CGI effects over the years made for some dazzling new tricks. Harrison Ford and Karen Allen reprised their roles. Sean Connery declined to participate (but he is referenced via a photograph). Shia LaBeouf, Ray Winstone, Jim Broadbent and John Hurt joined the cast... and Cate Blanchett raged on screen as the cunning villain.
