Vatel (2000): Gerard Depardieu, Uma Thurman and King Louis XIV of France

Directed by Roland Joffe, and written by Tom Stoppard, Vatel (2000) is based on the final days in the life of 17th Century French chef Francois Vatel. The story, set in 1671, finds financially struggling and gout-stricken Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Conde, receiving King Louis XIV for three days of extravagant festivities at Chateau de Chantilly… presided over by the talented Vatel. Visually stunning, great attention was given to historical detail in the lavish costume and set design of the production. Gerard Depardieu is excellent as Francois Vatel. Uma Thurman is beautiful as Anne de Montausier. Tim Roth is devious as the Marquis of Lauzun. Julian Sands shines as the "Sun King" Louis XIV. The supporting cast is good as well, including Julian Glover, Arielle Dombasle and Richard Griffiths. Ennio Morricone provides the musical score.
