The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

Written and directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, The Passion of Joan of Arc or La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928) is masterpiece of Silent Cinema that was believed to have been lost to fire until a version was discovered and restored in the 1980's. Based on historical records, the film portrays the May 30, 1431 trial of Joan of Arc and her resulting execution by being burned at the stake. Graphic and emotional, the film was banned in some areas upon its initial release. The sets are distorted and expressionistic, but maintain some medieval sense. The cast does a wonderful job, including Renee Jeanne Falconetti as Joan of Arc.
