The Seventh Seal (1957): Ingmar Bergman, Black Death and the Crusades

Written, produced and directed by Ingmar Bergman, The Seventh Seal (1957) is one of the all-time great examples of art cinema and the filmmaker's signature style. The story concerns a 14th Century knight, recently returned from the Crusades, who challenges Death to a game of chess… seeking answers to questions regarding life, death and the existence of God during the Black Plague. The film is a true Classic from beginning to end. The medieval setting and Templar atmosphere add to the mystique of the deep subject matter. The cast is wonderful, including Max von Sydow, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Bengt Ekerot, Nils Poppe, Bibi Andersson, Inga Landgre and Ake Fridell.
