Directed by Mira Nair, based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, Vanity Fair (2004) combines high drama with early 19th Century opulence. The story follows a young woman of modest birth, who defies her poverty-stricken background to climb the social ladder in 1820's London. The rags-to-riches scenario is beautifully set against an elegant yet realistic backdrop, which offers great care to historical detail and atmosphere. Reese Witherspoon is lovely in the lead role as Becky Sharp. The supporting cast is great as well, including Jonathan Rhys Meyers, James Purefoy, Gabriel Byrne, Eileen Atkins, Bob Hoskins and Jim Broadbent.
