Directed by William Dieterle, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) is one of the great classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood and remains a definitive film characterization of the story. Set in late 15th Century Paris, the plot centers on a lovely gypsy girl who is framed for murder and the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral that comes to her rescue. The film is pure splendor from beginning to end. The cast does an amazing job, including Charles Laughton as Quasimodo, Maureen O'Hara as Esmerelda, Sir Cedic Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell and Edmond O'Brien.
