Directed by John Lee Hancock, The Alamo (2004) is an underappreciated gritty epic that makes a genuine effort to embrace historical accuracy. The story follows the vastly outnumbered rebel Texian Army as they attempt to defend the Alamo against the forces of Mexican dictator General Santa Anna. Wonderful period details mix with good writing and tense action. Billy Bob Thornton is Davy Crockett, Jason Patric is Jim Bowie, Patrick Wilson is William Barret Travis and Dennis Quaid is Sam Houston.
