Directed by Otto Preminger, and written by Ben Hecht, Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) contains many thematic elements that would come to define the Film Noir genre. The story concerns a tough detective, with proclivity towards violence, who gets caught up in a murder cover up. Crisp cinematography and atmosphere create a tense feel. Dana Andrews is excellent in the lead role. Gene Tierney is breathtakingly beautiful, as always, in her role. The supporting cast is great as well, including Karl Malden and Oleg Cassini (Gene Tierney's real-life ex-husband).
