The Name of the Rose (1986): Sean Connery and Medieval Mystery

Based on the great novel of the same title by Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose (1986) is unique in the annals of detective films for it's chosen time period and setting: a medieval monastery in the early 14th Century. The story concerns intellectual Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and his apprentice Adso of Melk, who set out to solve a series of murders in a remote Italian abbey. Directed on a grand scale by Jean-Jacques Annaud, the abbey sets for The Name of the Rose were the largest movie sets constructed in Europe since Cleopatra (1963). The labyrinth and library scenes, with wonderful copies of ancient bound books are brilliantly photographed and capture the time period and bizarre setting quite well. The casting of Sean Connery as Willaim of Baskerville, who was at a career low at the time, was initially met with disapproval by both Annaud and Eco, but his stellar work ethic and performance later won everyone over. The supporting cast is great as well, including F. Murray Abraham as the Inquisitor Bernardo Gui, Christian Slater as Adso of Melk, Ron Perlman as Salvatore the Hunchback and William Hickey.
