Directed by Justin Chadwick, based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) presents a dramatic and stylish view of 16th Century England. The highly romanticized story is loosely based on the liaisons of Mary Boleyn, one-time mistress of King Henry VIII, and her sister Anne Boleyn, who became Henry's second wife… and was later beheaded. Liberties are taken with historical facts. Much attention is given to historical detail in regard to sets and costumes, and the cinematography is brilliant. Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are beautiful as the Boleyn sisters. Eric Bana looks nothing like King Henry VIII and was miscast, but nevertheless delivers a fine performance. The supporting cast is good as well, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Kristin Scott Thomas and Mark Rylance.
