The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939): Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes

     Directed by Sidney Lanfield, based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) is the most acclaimed of all Sherlock Holmes film adaptations... and marked the debut pairing of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Victorian atmosphere and mystery permeate this Classic tale of murder, curses and supernatural folklore. The Old World darkness of Baskerville Hall and the desolate Moor are palpable. It is an astounding film, all-around. John Carradine, Lionel Atwill and Richard Greene co-star.
