Directed by Shekhar Kapur, and written by William Nicholson and Michael Hirst, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) is the sequel to the outstanding 1998 film, Elizabeth. The story picks up roughly where the last film left off, and presents a somewhat fictionalized account of the later years in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603)… particularly with the threat that the Spanish crown exuded against England before the epic decimation of the Spanish Armada on the English Channel in the 16th Century. Of interesting note is the appearance of Dr. John Dee, a respected scientist of the period, whose studies in alchemy and hermeticism are rumored to have had a lasting effect in the lessons of Freemasonry. Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth I. Geoffrey Rush returns as the faithful and brutal advisor, Francis Walsingham. Clive Owen appears as New World Explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh, who had just returned from founding a colony in the "Virgin Queen" Elizabeth's name… Virginia. Samantha Morton is Mary, Queen of Scots. The supporting cast is great as well, including Eddie Redmayne, Abbie Cornish and David Threlfall.

Directed by Bob Clark, based on a book by Stephen Knight, Murder by Decree (1979) finds Sherlock Holmes rushing to solve the brutal Jack the Ripper murders. The plot points at the Royal Family and the Freemasons as suspects, a scenario that would be revisited in later Jack the Ripper films. At several points, Sherlock Holmes displays knowledge of the secret signs and handshakes of Freemasonry. At this point, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters had entered the public domain, and new stories had sprung forth using them. Christopher Plummer presents an empathetic Sherlock Holmes, a departure from previous portrayals. James Mason plays Dr. Watson as a level headed man with a valuable skill set, also a departure from past bumbling depictions. The supporting cast is great as well, including Donald Sutherland, John Gielgud, Susan Clark and David Hemmings.
