The Artist and the Model (2012): An Aging Sculptor and Young Female Inspiration

Co-written and directed by Fernando Trueba, The Artist and the Model (2012) received critical acclaim and was nominated for several European award honors. The story, set in 1943 occupied France, concerns a famous elderly sculptor who is tired with life but finds new inspiration to return to his art with the arrival of a new model… a pretty young Spanish woman who escaped from a refugee camp and becomes a muse. The depiction of the artistic process and related struggles are on-point and admirable. The black and white cinematography is well suited to the subject, and captures the story with dramatic lighting and tones. Jean Rochefort is great as the aging Sculptor. Aida Folch is lovely as his nude model and muse. 1960's screen legend and famous Italian beauty Claudia Cardinale co-stars in a minor role.

Frida (2002): Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo

In Frida (2002), directed by Julie Taymor, Salma Hayek delivers what is perhaps her most dynamic performance... as the tortured and tragic Surrealist Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The story of Kahlo's life, art and love affairs with her philandering husband Diego Rivera and numerous others (of both sexes) unfolds with brightly-hued style in the flavor of the artist's own work. The creation of fascinating works on screen, and the depictions of well-known Art World figures adds to the allure. The whole cast is great, including Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, Alfred Molina, Antonio Banderas, Geoffrey Rush, Edward Norton, Diego Luna and Valeria Golino.
