     I recently visited the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. Completed in 1932, the building is modeled after the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). Funded by contributions from Freemasons, the structure stands as a memorial to George Washington, the first President of the United States and a Mason. Memorial Hall features a colossal 17-foot-tall statue of Washington in his regalia. In July of 2015, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Travis Simpkins Visits the House of the Temple, Supreme Council 33° in Washington, D.C.

     I recently visited my friend Arturo de Hoyos at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. and greatly enjoyed touring the building. Located one mile directly north of the White House, the magnificent structure is modeled after the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). The House of the Temple is home to the Supreme Council 33° of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction. Completed in 1915, the building was designed by John Russell Pope, who later designed the Jefferson Memorial and the National Gallery of Art.
