Directed by Andrew Dominik, based on the brilliant 1983 novel by Ron Hansen, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) received mild attention upon it's initial release… but a movement has begun to have the film theatrically re-released in hopes that it will get the accolades it truly deserves the second time around. Not only is it one of the best Western films in recent memory, it also ranks amongst the best films of the last decade or more, period. The cinematography, by Roger Deakins, is superbly creative and resembles 19th Century photography at times. The story concerns the betrayal and killing of Jesse James by Bob Ford, a casual member of his gang. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are spectacular in the title roles. The supporting cast is great as well, including Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Zooey Deschanel, Nick Cave and Sam Shepard.
