Admiral (2015): Michiel de Ruyter and 17th Century Netherlands

Directed by Roel Reine, Admiral or Michiel de Ruyter (2015) is a superb biographical film adaptation of the esteemed 17th Century Dutch Admiral, Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). When the young republic of the Netherlands is threatened by the English and French, the best weapon at their disposal is the Dutch fleet, led by Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Epic sea battles and sweeping drama highlight a well-written script, a wonderful effort all-around. The cast does afire job, including Frank Lammers, Barry Atsma and Egbert-Jan Weber.

Valhalla Rising (2009): Medieval Norse Crusaders in North America

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Valhalla Rising (2009) is a cerebral adventure drama that received some degree of critical praise. Set in 1096 A.D., the story follows a pagan warrior who escapes his captors and joins a group of Crusaders on their way to defend the Holy Land… but the group is put off course and they find themselves in a hellish, unknown land (North America). The story of inadvertent Pre-Columbian exploration is both interesting and creative, but moves slowly at times. The cast does a good job all-around, including Mads Mikkelsen in the main role.

The Last King (2016): 13th Century Medieval Norway

Directed by Nils Gaup, and written by Ravn Lanesskog, The Last King (2016) originally titled Birkebeineme is loosely based on historic events. In 1206 A.D., Norway is torn between warring factions and the dying King enlists the help of two men to protect his illegitimate infant son, the rightful heir to the throne. Wonderful medieval period details create the perfect atmosphere and the ski chases through the snowy winter landscape are intense. The cast of Norwegian actors is superb all-around.
