Solomon Kane (2009): 16th Century Battle Against Evil

Written and directed by Michael J. Bassett, based on the pulp characters created in 1928 by Robert E. Howard, Solomon Kane (2009) is a dark fantasy that has gained a Cult following. The story concerns a brutal and skilled 16th Century mercenary, who renounces violence after learning that his soul is bound for Hell. However, when a young puritan girl is abducted and her family murdered by the minions of a domineering sorcerer, he seeks the redemption of his soul through her rescue. Full of action and adventure, the film is entertaining throughout. Predictable dialogue mixes with innovative special effects. James Purefoy is excellent in the lead role. The rest of the cast does a good job as well, including Max von Sydow, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Pete Postlethwaite.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975): King Arthur and Comedy

Directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) was conceived between the 3rd and 4th season of the hit TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus. The story concerns King Arthur and his quest for the Holy Grail, aided by his knights of Camelot. One memorable scene follows another, and the film is funny throughout. The whole cast is fantastic, including Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Eric Idle.
