Gettysburg (1993): The Civil War, Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels

     Written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell, based on the Michael Shaara's novel "The Killer Angels," Gettysburg (1993) is a monumental cinematic achievement spanning over four hours of screen time. The film follows leaders on both the Union and Confederate sides at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, a decisive battle in the American Civil War between the States. The drama and action unfold with perfect pace, entertaining throughout. The cast does a wonderful job, including Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee, Tom Berenger as Lieutenant General James Longstreet and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain.

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007)

     Directed by Sergei Bodrov, Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) was supposedly intended to be the first part of a trilogy… but ten years later, no follow-ups have been released. Set in the late 12th Century, the film chronicles the early life of Temujin, who later came to be known as Genghis Khan. Good attention to historic detail mixes with tense battle scenes and great cinematography to create a believable atmosphere. The cast does a good job, including Tadanobu Asano as Temujin/Genghis Khan.

The Revenant (2015): Leonardo DiCaprio. Hugh Glass and a Bear Attack in 1823

     Directed by Alejandro G. Inaritu, based on the novel by Michael Punke, The Revenant (2015) received widespread praise upon its release. The revenge story is loosely based on biographical events in the life of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who survived being mauled by a grizzly bear in 1823. The film mixes the true events with fiction in a combination that works extraordinarily well. The cinematography is superb, capturing the grittiness of early 19th Century frontier exploration. Leonardo DiCaprio deservedly won the Best Actor Academy Award for his work in the lead role. The supporting cast is great as well, including Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter.
