Sagebrush Trail (1933): John Wayne

Directed by Armand Schaefer, Sagebrush Trail (1933) was an early John Wayne performance filmed for Monogram Pictures. A standard Hollywood Western tale, full of action, the story concerns a falsely charged outlaw on the run and hiding out with a gang. John Wayne is young and forceful in his role. The rest of the cast is fine as well, including Nancy Shubert and Lane Chandler.

Directed by John Ford, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) is one of the best Westerns ever made. When Senator Stoddard arrives in town for the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon, reporters gather around to get the scoop and hear an astounding flashback tale of the frontier... plagued by an outlaw named Liberty Valance. The cast and script are all spot on and the black & white cinematography adds to the feel. The cast does a great job all-around, including James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Vera Miles, Andy Devine, Edmond O'Brien, Woody Strode, John Carradine and Lee Van Cleef.
