Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Directed by Gore Verbinski, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was the first in a series of films to be based on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at the Disney theme parks. It was an odd premise and gamble that paid off. The film is astounding, both in style and scope, and the subsequent sequels follow similar suit. The story concerns the kidnapping of the daughter of Port Royal's Governor by the damned crew of the Black Pearl, cursed for having stolen a piece of Aztec gold… doomed to the world of the undead until the gold piece is returned. Although the plot has fanciful and supernatural elements, great attention was given to historical detail in regard to the 18th Century costumes, ships and set design. Focusing on the exploits of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the film interweaves a motley group of unforgettable characters on the sea in the 18th Century.
