Directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) is the fifth installment in the popular swashbuckling franchise based on the Walt Disney Studios concept. This story finds Captain Jack Sparrow in search of the Trident of Poseidon while being pursued by the brutal and undead Captain Salazar. As in the previous films, the action is fast-paced and the CGI effects are top-both throughout. The 18th Century atmosphere and references to horology and astronomy are both fascinating and entertaining. The cast does a great job, including Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Barden, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario. Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and a special cameo by Paul McCartney of the Beatles.

With Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), director Gore Verbinski, who had directed the previous Pirates films, was replaced by Rob Marshall. It was a questionable decision that has a palpable feel in the flow of the film. Nevertheless, the film, the fourth in the Disney series, is quite entertaining... with Jack Sparrow, Barbossa and Blackbeard in search of Ponce de Leon and the legendary Fountain of Youth. Supernatural elements blend with wonderful 18th Century historic detail (including Court Palace scenes). The CGI is superb, especially in regard to the Mermaid scenes, and the action is intense. The cast is great, including Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Ian McShane as Blackbeard.
