Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, based on "In a Glass Darkly" by Sheridan Le Fanu, Vampyr (1932) proved to be quite challenging… as it was Dreyer's first sound film and it needed to be marketed in three different languages. The end result is a German talkie film with very little dialogue, relying mainly on the old-style placards of Silent Films and creepy sound effects. The story focuses on a drifter who is obsessed with the occult and supernatural studies… and the strange events that transpire when he stumbles upon an inn where a severely ill young girl is slowly becoming a vampire. Full of allegory and symbolism, peaked by dark images of death, the cinematography is moody and brilliant. The cast does a wonderful job, including Julian West, Maurice Schultz and Sybille Schmitz.
