Written and directed by Stephen Sommers, Van Helsing (2004) is in many ways an homage and tribute to the old Universal Horror Monster Movies… with the old films being re-released on DVD at the same time for optimum marketing effect. The story concerns Van Helsing battling Dracula, but with Frankenstein's Monster, werewolves and Mr. Hyde thrown in for good measure. Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley's material is put to good use. Impressive CGI effects and an entertaining storyline make the film worthwhile, despite naysayers. Hugh Jackman is great as Van Helsing. Kate Beckinsale is sexy as a female vampire hunter. The supporting cast is good as well, including Richard Roxburgh, David Wenham, Will Kemp, Kevin J. O'Connor and Shuler Hensley.
