Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973): Kris Kristofferson, James Coburn and Bob Dylan

Directed by Sam Peckinpah, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) was plagued by disagreements between the filmmaker and the studio… leading to Peckinpah losing the picture after completion, with the studio releasing a highly criticized and awkward cut. In 1988, Peckinpah re-released the film in his own original vision, and it has since come to be recognized as a true classic Western. The story concerns Sherif Pat Garrett being hired to hunt down his former friend, outlaw Billy the Kid in 1881 New Mexico. Kris Kristofferson has a breakout role as Billy the Kid. James Coburn is great as Pat Garrett. Bob Dylan appears in a minor role as "Alias", and he also wrote the music for the soundtrack, including the now-classic song "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Slim Pickens, Katy Jurado and Jason Robards co-star.
