Directed by Jon Amiel, Entrapment (1999) is a solid caper film that has consistently grown in Cult status and acclaim over the past 15 years. It stands out as one of the most popular Art Theft films on perennial film lists. The story concerns two thieves who play both sides in a both a major art heist and a sophisticated plan to rob a Malaysian bank during the millennium celebration. Cliches, far-fetched security systems and improbable plot twists can be given leeway because the film is so entertaining… from the theft of a famous Rembrandt painting, to the daring and complex heist of a priceless Chinese golden mask, the two cunning thieves are in top-form. Sean Connery is masterful in his role as an aging art thief. However, Catherine Zeta-Jones steals the show in a now-famous scene in which the camera follows her body as she maneuvers through a mock laser set-up while preparing for her graceful and flexible role in the art heist. The supporting cast is good as well, including Ving Rhames and Will Patton.
