777 and Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley. Magick. Occult. Thelema |
"777 and Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley" is a useful book of correspondences.
Gematria provides essential explanations of theoretical and practical Qabalistic number analysis and philosophy. “An Essay in Number,” also included, provides invaluable insights into key numbers as well as techniques and safeguards for practical magical work. Gematria was first published in The Equinox, vol. 1. no. 5.
777 itself contains, in concise tabulated form, an overview of symbolism of the major world religions, as well as the system of correspondence of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In short, it is a complete magical and philosophical dictionary—a key to all religion and practical occultism—an amazing work whose value has been recognized through many editions since its first appearance in 1909 and subsequent enlargement in 1955.
The third text in this collection is Sepher Sephiroth, a unique dictionary listing hundreds of Hebrew words arranged by numerical value. It was compiled jointly by Aleister Crowley and Allan Bennett and first appeared in The Equinox, vol. 1, no. 8.

The Dark Lord. H.P. Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant and the Typhonian Tradition in Magic. Peter Levenda

The Dark Lord. H.P. Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant and the Typhonian Tradition in Magic. Peter Levenda |
I'm keeping with a H.P. Lovecraft theme and reading "The Dark Lord" by Peter Levenda.
One of the most famous - yet least understood - manifestations of Thelemic thought has been the works of Kenneth Grant, the British occultist and one-time intimate of Aleister Crowley, who discovered a hidden world within the primary source materials of Crowley's Aeon of Horus. Using complementary texts from such disparate authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Parsons, Austin Osman Spare, and Charles Stansfeld Jones ("Frater Achad"), Grant formulated a system of magic that expanded upon that delineated in the rituals of the OTO: a system that included elements of Tantra, of Voudon, and in particular that of the Schlangekraft recension of the Necronomicon, all woven together in a dark tapestry of power and illumination.
The Dark Lord follows the themes in the writings of Kenneth Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, and the Necronomicon, uncovering further meanings of the concepts of the famous writers of the Left Hand Path. It is for Thelemites, as well as lovers of the Lovecraft Mythos in all its forms, and for those who find the rituals of classical ceremonial magic inadequate for the New Aeon.
Traveling through the worlds of religion, literature, and the occult, Peter Levenda takes his readers on a deeply fascinating exploration on magic, evil, and The Dark Lord as he investigates of one of the most neglected theses in the history of modern occultism: the nature of the Typhonian Current and its relationship to Aleister Crowley's Thelema and H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon.

Necronomicon. Grimoire. Simon. Peter Levenda. H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu Mythos |
I'm keeping with a H.P. Lovecraft theme and reading the "Necronomicon"
"This is the testimony of all that I have seen, and all that I have learned. . . . For this is the Book of the Dead, the Book of the Black Earth, that I have writ down at the peril of my life..."
The classic and controversial grimoire—a book of magic, spells, and rituals, ready to be incorporated into your life
Since its initial publication in 1977, there has been a lot of ink spilled on the subject of the Necronomicon. Some have derided it as a clumsy hoax, while others have praised it as a powerful spell book. As the decades have passed, more information has come to light both on the book's origins and discovery, and on the information contained within its pages. Regardless of its origins, the Necronomicon has been found to contain formulae for spiritual transformation consistent with some of the most ancient mystical processes in the world—processes that were not public knowledge when the book was first published, processes that involve communion with the stars.
Despite the controversy, the first edition sold out before it was published—and it has never been out of print in the decades since then. If this book or the arcane practices that it claims to illuminate have ever piqued your interest, then wait no longer, and discover the truths that the Necronomicon has in store for you and the impact that it can have on your life.

Enochian Vision Magick. Lon Milo DuQuette. John Dee. Edward Kelley

Enochian Vision Magick. Lon Milo DuQuette. John Dee. Edward Kelley |
I'm enjoying Enochian Vision Magick by Lon Milo DuQuette.
Having mastered the arts and sciences of his age, Elizabethan magus Dr. John Dee (1527–1608) resolved that worldly knowledge could no longer provide him the wisdom he desired, and as did so many other learned men of the day, he turned his attention to magick. In 1582 he and his clairvoyant partner Edward Kelley made magical contact with a number of spiritual entities who identified themselves as angels―the same that communicated with Enoch and the patriarchs of the Old Testament. Over the next 3 years they revealed to Dee and Kelley three distinct magical systems of vision magick. The third and last of these incorporated a series of “calls” to be recited in an angelic language in order to raise the consciousness of the magician to a level where angelic contact is possible.
In Enochian Vision Magick, Lon Milo DuQuette introduces the origins of Enochian magick and offers the expert and novice alike the opportunity not only to see the big picture of the full system but also the practical means by which he or she can become attuned in the same step-by-step manner that first prepared Dee and Kelley.
First published by Weiser in 2008, this new edition includes a new introduction and new back matter by the author as well as a new foreword by Jason Louv.

The Life and Death of John Yarker. David Harrison. Lewis Masonic

The Life and Death of John Yarker. David Harrison. Lewis Masonic |
I'm enjoying "The Life and Death of John Yarker" by David Harrison.
John Yarker was a Victorian Occultist, Freemason and esoteric Truth Seeker, who is now somewhat revered by both esoteric Freemasons and Occultists alike. He was born in Cumbria, but moved to Manchester, where he spent the rest of his life, and authored countless articles, short papers, and books that now fetch large sums at book auctions. He also collected together a number of Masonic and Oriental Orders, and he was said to have been the lynchpin for the founding of the O.T.O., a move that secured his Occult status. Indeed, Yarker was a strong influence on Aleister Crowley, introducing him to the Ancient and Primitive Rite.
This work is the first extensive biography written of John Yarker's life, and explores his early life, his Masonic career, and his eclectic collection of Rites and Orders, which include the Society of Eight, the Sat B'hai, the Swedenborgian Rite, the Ancient and Primitive Rite, Martinism and the Adoptive Rite, to name but a few.
The book also presents an examination of his extensive works, and looks at his legacy, focusing especially upon his collection of Rites and Orders, some of which survive today and are still practiced. The work highlights documents and letters from Yarker that have never before been published, including letters that chart the early beginnings of the Operatives and the O.T.O. The work also presents a deep insight into Yarker's life and legacy, especially examining how Yarker is still celebrated in certain esoteric lineages that exist today.
Highlights include:
Yarker's Orders, Societies and Rites include the Society of Eight, Sat B'hai, the Swedenborgian Rite, the Celestial Brotherhood, the Ancient and Primitive Rite, Martinism and the Adoptive Rite, to name but a few.
Includes documents and letters never before been published and an extensive list of Yarkers known works.
Discover Yarker's key role in the founding of the Order of the Operatives.
Learn about the mysterious order of the Sat B'hai, an Order that, like the Hermetic Brothers of Egypt, was inspired by the fashionable Orientalism of the period.

Manifest Thy Glory. NOTOCON. 2011. Ordo Templi Orientis. O.T.O. |
I'm Enjoying "Manifest Thy Glory"
Manifest Thy Gloryoffers a selection of papers from the eighth biennial National Ordo Templi Orientis Conference (NOTOCON) of the United States Grand Lodge of O.T.O., held in the Valley of Detroit, Michigan, in 2011 EV. The papers cover diverse topics including the Holy Guardian Angel, talismans in magick, spatial orientation in ritual, and other magical methods; occult history and biography, including the Stele of Revealing and Ida Craddock; promulgation of Thelema through publishing and podcasts; textual analysis from Catullus to “Liber Trigrammaton;” a touching reminiscence from the incomparable Lon Milo DuQuette; and even space, the final frontier. Other highlights include a street guide to Thelemic historical sites in Detroit, and the address given by U.S. National Grand Master Sabazius. They represent some of best modern practical and scholarly work on Ordo Templi Orientis, Thelema, and the magick of Aleister Crowley.
The first NOTOCON conference took place in 1997 EV in Akron, Ohio, and has since been held on alternate years in different cities around the United States. Manifest Thy Gloryis the third collection of papers from the national conference to be made available, following the inaugural volume Beauty & Strengthfor the 2007 EV conference.
Ordo Templi Orientis is an international fraternal order of men and women devoted to the pursuit of individual liberty, the study of magick, and the promulgation of the Law of Thelema. Founded in the early twentieth century, it has been shaped by such leading lights as Carl Kellner, Theodor Reuss, Aleister Crowley, Karl Germer and Grady Louis McMurtry.

Q.B.L. Qabalah. Tree of Life. Frater Achad. Thelema. Occult |
This newer edition includes an introduction by Lon Milo DuQuette
Q.B.L.is a masterpiece of Qabalah and controversy. Its importance to the world of modern occult literature can be measured not only by its value as a remarkable, understandable textbook of the fundamental principles of Qabalah, but also by the way it offers us a rare glimpse into the heart and mind of a brilliant and sincere seeker of wisdom and truth. Q.B.L. is a unique work in both Qabalah and Thelemic circles.
In the world of the Qabalah, Frater Achad revealed revolutionary new principles that caused students of the Qabalah to reexamine and thus deepen their knowledge of the Tree of Life. In Thelemic circles, Aleister Crowley named Frater Achad his magical heir and Achad was fully expected to lead the cause of Thelemic Magick after Crowley's deathuntil publication of this book caused a rift between the two and Crowley began to distance himself from Achad. This is a rare and valuable book, both for its insight and circumstances. True understanding of the Qabalah and its benefit in magical practice is clearly described, and the information contained is both practical and revelatory. The circumstances surrounding it--Frater Achad's falling out with Crowley and eventual descent into apparent insanity--prove a valuable lesson and warning for individual seekers and those associated with established mystery schools.

Sexuality, Magic and Perversion. Francis King. Order Temple Orientis. OTO. Aleister Crowley |
I'm enjoying "Sexuality, Magic and Perversion" by Francis King...
Sexuality, Magic & Perversion by Francis King is a controversial, revelatory, highly recommended volume of original research that investigates sexuality in religions and traditions all over the globe, from fertility cults and tantricism to Islamic mysticism and Crowleyan sex magick. A tantalizing study of the mystical aspect of sex, heavily researched.
Sexuality, Magic, and Perversion surveys such outre subjects as sex magic, left-hand Tantrism, and the initiates of Aleister Crowleys Order of Oriental Templars. This fascinating and highly readable book also discusses the role of magical fantasy in contemporary pornography. Appendices cover obscurities such as Ralph Chubbs homoerotic mysticism and the women bishops of the Mariavite Church in Poland.
