Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre (2001): Sophie Marceau and an Egyptian Curse

Co-written and directed by Jean-Paul Salome, Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre (2001), or Belphegor- Le fantome du Louvre is a French supernatural thriller with mild horror undertones. When a mummy is excavated in Egypt and brought to the Louvre in 1935, it brings a murderous curse along with it… for the anonymous spirit cannot pass over to the other side unless someone deciphers and utters it's long-forgotten name. The film was the first feature to be allowed full access to shoot inside the world renowned Musee du Louvre in Paris, with many of it's well known pieces prominently displayed. The film's portrayal of museum security is a bit hokey, but understandable given the context. Sophie Marceau is beautiful in the lead role. Julie Christie costars as an archaeologist/conservator conducting research on the mummy.
