A Midsummer Night's Dream. 1999 Film. William Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night's Dream. 1999 film. William Shakespeare

Directed by Michael Hoffman, based on the play by William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) updates the backdrop to a 19th Century setting. Otherwise, the story remains the same when the world of humans intersects with the realm of magic. Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his loyal Puck have fun casting spells on lovestruck humans as well as the Fairy Queen Titania. Wondrous and entertaining throughout. The cast is great all around, including Sophie Marceau, Rupert Everett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart, Kevin Kline, Christian Bale and Dominic West.

The World is Not Enough (1999): Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards

Directed by Michael Apted, The World is Not Enough (1999) is the 19th film in the James Bond series and the 3rd outing for Pierce Brosnan as 007. The story centers on a terrorist plot to corner the market on the world's petroleum prices by triggering a nuclear meltdown. Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards are stunning as the two Bond girls. As usual, the special effects and action are over the top impressive. A very well executed production.

Female Agents (2008): Sophie Marceau in World War II

Co-written and directed by Jean-Pierre Salome, Female Agents or Les Femmes de l'ombre (2008) was inspired by an obituary for a lesser-known resistance fighter, Lise de Baissac, that the director had read in the newspaper. The story follows female members of the SOE during World War II, disguised as nurses, who are sent to rescue a geologist (whose work will be instrumental in the D-Day invasion) from the Nazis. The film is well made, but slow at times. Sophie Marceau is beautiful in the lead role. The supporting cast does a great job as well, including Julie Depardieu, Marie Gillain, Deborah Francois and Moritz Bleibtreu.
