The Passion of the Christ (2004): The Final Hours of Jesus (Mel Gibson and Jim Caviezel)

     Co-written and directed by Mel Gibson, The Passion of the Christ (2004) is both extremely powerful and highly controversial. The graphic violence and brutal realism depicted in the 12 final hours in the life of Jesus Christ are strong images to grasp… from the betrayal, to the condemnation and bloody scourging, to the crucifixion and resurrection. True to the period, the dialogue is all in Latin and Aramaic with subtitles. The cinematography is superb, dramatic and vibrant. All debate aside, the film is a magnificent cinematic achievement worthy of praise. Jim Caviezel is great as Jesus. Monica Bellucci is radiant as Mary Magdalene.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988): Martin Scorsese, Willem Dafoe and Controversy

     Directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the 1953 novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) was unsurprisingly met with controversy and protest upon it's release. To clarify, a disclaimer appears at the start of the film to say that the events depicted are not a retelling of the Gospels. The dramatic story focuses on the emotions and manly urges of Jesus, including lust and fear… and offers an alternate tangent in which Jesus did not die on the cross, but lived to be an old man and father children with Mary Magdalene and other women. Willem Dafoe is excellent as Jesus. Harvey Keitel is good as Judas. David Bowie has a brief role as Pontius Pilate. The supporting cast is fine as well, including John Lurie, Barbara Hershey, Harry Dean Stanton and Roberts Blossom.
