Directed by Farhad Safinia (under the pseudonym P.B. Shemran), based on the 1998 book "The Surgeon of Crowthorne" by Simon Winchester, The Professor and the Madman (2019) is an acting tour-de-force for both Mel Gibson and Sean Penn. There were production disputes after which both Safinia and Gibson distanced themselves from the film in their disappointment, but it is still quite powerful nevertheless.
The plot is summarized: The life of Professor James Murray is portrayed as he begins work on compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid-19th century. As he led the overseeing committee, the professor received over 10,000 entries from one source in particular- a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr William Minor.
The cast is outstanding, Including Mel Gibson, Sean Penn and Natalie Dormer.
