Directed by Jack Clayton, with a screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola, The Great Gatsby (1974) follows F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel closely and stays true to the plot. Taking place in ultra-rich 1920's Long Island, New York... the story focuses on mysteriously-rich Jay Gatsby's love for spoiled Daisy, and the tragic consequences that follow. Filmed in Newport, Rhode Island, the Gilded Age mansions of Bellevue Avenue served as a suitable backdrop for the decadent Jazz Era 1920's, and the cinematography is simply lovely. Rosecliff, The Elms, The Breakers and Marble House are all nicely featured. The cast does a good job, including Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Karen Black, Scott Wilson and Bruce Dern.
