"The Enigma of the Freemasons: Their History and Mystical Connections" by Tim Wallace-Murphy

Notes by Travis Simpkins

In his introduction to The Enigma of the Freemasons: Their History and Mystical Connections, author Tim Wallace-Murphy states: "Here, I follow a line of argument shared by many others, but one which does not, nevertheless, fall within 'mainstream' thinking. As a Freemason, I have studied this subject in depth for many years and have come to the conclusions that you will find in this book." What follows in the text is a profound yet straightforward presentation of the probable origins of Freemasonry and an explanation of how the Craft relates to Humanity and the esoteric, spiritual path.
The journey shows the reader subjects such as the ancient cradle of culture in Greece and Egypt, the birth of Christianity, hidden streams of spirituality, the medieval craft masons, the Holy Grail and the Templars, Scottish beginnings, consolidation and division, Freemasons' influence on society, brotherhood and charity. He discusses Rosslyn Chapel at great length as well, a subject with which he is well acquainted. The pages are richly illustrated, with most images in full color and many helpful sidebars. Brother Tim Wallace-Murphy's book offers an overview, yes, but from the point of view of one of the genre's great scribes. In short, this well-conceived work should be a cornerstone of every Masonic library.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975): Freemasonry, Sean Connery and Michael Caine

Directed by John Huston, based on the 1888 novella by Rudyard Kipling, The Man Who Would Be King (1975) is an escapist adventure that is massively entertaining. The story follows two rogue British Soldiers (and Freemasons) in India, who venture off and set themselves up as Gods in remote Kafiristan… a land that has not seen white men in over 2,000 years, since the time of Alexander the Great. Masonic connections, references and imagery are apparent throughout, with the Square & Compasses and the All Seeing Eye proving to be the salvation of the main characters at one point. The scenes in which Daniel Dravot is shown the ancient treasure hoard of Alexander and his coronation complete with golden crown and Masonic regalia are particularly interesting. Battle scenes and well written dialogue carry the story along nicely. The cast does a wonderful job, with Sean Connery, Michael Caine and Christopher Plummer taking on the main roles.
