A Freemason's Journey Through Space and Time. From the 1st to the 33rd Degree. Kamel Oussayef. Jacques Ruelland. Scottish Rite, NMJ

I'm enjoying "A Freemason's Journey Through Space and Time (from the 1st to the 33rd Degree)" co-written by my dear friend Ill. Kamel Oussayef, 33°. It is a very unique book with an original approach. The book combines an overview of the Scottish Rite degrees with a mix of historical fiction, Sci-fi, and Mythology.
The book is published by the Scottish Rite, NMJ and can be purchased directly from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library in Lexington, Massachusetts

This captivating book witnesses the extraordinary journey of a man who ascends from the first to the 33rd Degree of Freemasonry, navigating a timeline that spans from well before the Middle Ages to the 21st century. At each Degree, the protagonist sheds his earthly and spiritual shell, metamorphoses into a different person, and evolves through stages of knowledge, wisdom, tolerance, and development (both physical and spiritual). He possesses a remarkable ability to adapt to the diverse settings where fate places him—among the Masters of the Renaissance in Southeastern Europe, the Apache in North America, the Knight Templars in the Middle East, or Buddhist monks in Asia to mention only a few.

Marcel Burton, the fictional hero, embodies the journey of any soul-searching individual seeking the meaning of life. His odyssey takes us through Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and up to the modern era. The spiritual journey begins with Marcel as a demigod, gradually metamorphosing him into a Freeman, a Gnostic, a Knight, a Shaman at the time of Geronimo, and ultimately, a Servant of God—alternatively as a Muslim Imam or a Jewish Rabbi, sharing the same soul in different bodies.

A Freemason’s Journey through Space & Time was co-written by Kamel Oussayef, 33°, a member of the New Hampshire Masonic Consistory, and Illustrious Brother Jacques G. Ruelland, PhD., 33°, Deputy for the Masonic Scottish Rite in the Province of Quebec, Canada. To bridge the geographical distance between them and facilitate their remote labor, they wrote the initial text in French, after which Kamel translated it into English.

The book draws upon legends and allegories from a variety of sources — the Bible, the Quran, and other religious, philosophical, and historical texts — that have endured through time without losing their relevance. These narratives are reminiscent of the works of Classical Greek playwrights, Roman orators, medieval scholars, Chinese and Indian thinkers, 17th-century Japanese and Russian writers, and the prolific intellectual creativity of 18th-century Europe during the Enlightenment.

The book aims to parallel the progression of Masonic Degrees with broader human experience through seven key periods spanning from primordial nothingness to contemporary times. The comparison is succinctly illustrated by the metaphor of the Masonic three classical Greek columns in action: Corinthian Beauty during Antiquity, Doric inner strength during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Ionic wisdom in modern and contemporary times.

Particularly intended for younger and newer members of the Scottish Rite, the book will also captivate more seasoned Brothers and the general public with its exploration of philosophical, historical, political, sociological, and demographic themes. It is unique in its approach, perhaps even a world-first in presenting so openly the Degrees of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in this manner. An innovative type of Masonic manual that reads like a novel, it seamlessly blends multiple literary genres, ranging from a historical fiction to science fiction, or from a literary essay to a 21st century treatise on ethics for younger generations.

The Freemasons Key. Masonic Symbolism. Albert Mackey. Joseph Fort Newton. Michael R. Poll

I'm enjoying "The Freemasons Key: Masonic Symbolism" edited by Michael R. Poll.

Symbolism is the language of Freemasonry. But what is symbolism? Why does Masonry use it? Who else has used symbolism? From the powerful pens of Albert Mackey, Joseph Fort Newton, Oliver Day Street, H. L. Haywood and more comes a wide selection of papers on the symbolic nature of Freemasonry, the Masonic method of teaching, as well as explaining the symbolism of the Masonic degrees. This is an indispensable work for anyone seeking to better understand Freemasonry and its practices.

Freemasonry and Fraternal Societies. David Harrison and Fred Lomax
Freemasonry and Fraternal Societies. David Harrison and Fred Lomax

I'm enjoying "Freemasonry and Fraternal Societies" by David Harrison and Fred Lomax.

Leading Masonic authors Dr David Harrison and Fred Lomax re-examine Friendly Societies, Freemasonry and other Fraternal Orders of England in this, their latest work. The authors present the individual histories of the Odd Fellows, Foresters, Druids, Buffaloes, Gardeners, and more obscure Orders such as the Rechabites; putting forward the similarities with Freemasonry, in its ritual and regalia. There has not been a book on this subject for over ten years. Several of these societies developed a fraternal aspect to their activities, using Freemasonry as their model via ritual and practice; open to men and women of all walks of life. Declaring their organisations free of politics and religion, yet declaring a strong financial support for their members at a time when the ordinary worker had little or no protection against illness or injury at work. A number of these societies developed into extremely large organisations that are still successful and remain so today, despite the decline of a considerable number in the wake of the arrival of the Welfare State in the UK. Many were small local organisations which met in pubs and clubs; others had local offices on the high street. The book shows how the larger organisations survived and prospered. This book will be of interest to both Freemasons and members of the orders featured in the book as it''s by knowing our connections with each other we learn more about ourselves. The book is richly illustrated, depicting the personal stories associated with the various Orders. The photographs will also show various never-before-published regalia, jewels, and artefacts, which will demonstrate the importance of the Orders and their contribution to British social history during the industrial revolution.

Meditations of a Flawed Ashlar. Bill Hosler. The Midnight Freemasons

I'm enjoying "Meditations of a Flawed Ashlar" by Bill Hosler.

Sharing his observations from his historied Masonic career, Confessions of a flawed ashlar is Bill Hosler's love letter to Freemasonry. Bill blends fiction and non-fiction to tell poignant stories about the mystic tie of brotherhood. While so many modern Masonic writings look externally for solutions to some of Freemasonry's issues, Bill looks internally finding them readily available at the local Lodge level. His friendly and humorous prose makes for an easy read. Both the novice and experienced Freemason will find wisdom in this book.

Freemasonry on the Frontier. Quatuor Coronati Lodge. Masonic Research. Colonial America

"Freemasonry on the Frontier" was published in 2020. I contributed a portrait of Rob Morris to the essay about him (page 86), so I had already read that particular section a long while ago. I'm just now finding a spare bit of time to read through some of the other essays.

A collection of seventeen original papers by leading Masonic researchers and academics tracking the evolution of Freemasonry in America from the original thirteen colonies to the Pacific Coast. Contributors include Ric Berman, Brent Morris, Mike Kearsley, Barry Hoffbrand, John Wade, Adam Kendall, and Andreas Önnerfors, members of Quatuor Coronati Lodge, and a number of outstanding American scholars: Ben Williams, Hilary Anderson Stelling, Hans Schwartz ,John Kyle Day, Jeffrey Croteau, Andrew Hammer, Daniel Gardiner, and Walter H. A Pilgrim's Path. John J. Robinson. Freemasonry and the Religious Right

A Pilgrim's Path. John J. Robinson. Freemasonry and the Religious Right
A Pilgrim's Path. John J. Robinson. Freemasonry and the Religious Right

"A Pilgrim's Path" by John J. Robinson is a good read. This one had been sitting on my shelf for a long while. It is an interesting look at various anti-Masonic arguments and misconceptions.

An excellent, excellent easy read that's hard to put down, a must have for all Mason's libraries and those who are considering joining the craft. Mr. John Robinson wrote this book as a Non-Mason, he asked Masons what they would like him to write about, being a writer and historian of Medieval Britain and the Crusades he knew how to perform research, and not just believe what he was being told, but to find the truth. He researched the origins of Freemasonry and how it made its way into the new colonies. He has spoken to Masonic groups all across the country on the history on Masonry. In his research he asked the man on the street what he or she thought of Freemasons? He took questions on radio talk shows from the curious and from Anti-Masons with the knowledge he had gained from his research, not just what Masons said. The Anti-Mason who called to make their point quickly found out they were incorrect in their assumptions, but always in a civil and pleasant manner. He critiqued fundamentalists' religious leaders like Pat Robertson and John Ankerberg, both who have attacked Masonry. He speaks of Dr. James Holly who has made numerous attempts to have the Southern Baptist Leadership condemn Freemasonry and to have all Baptist Pastors removed who are Masons. Fortunately, Holly and his small radical group have not been able to accomplish this. The fundamentalists like Pat Robertson, James Holly and others like them take a document credited to Albert Pike which makes it look like Pike and all Masons worship Lucifer. This was not written by Albert Pike, but in fact written by a man named Leo Taxil who would later freely admit he made the whole thing up and that Pike had nothing to do with it. Taxil, who suffered convictions of financial fraud in France and later ejection from Switzerland for the same was always looking for an easy money scam. He wrote anti-Catholic publications, such as satires, poking fun at church leaders, but realized little money doing so, turned his attention to Freemasonry. Seeing the conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the Masonic order Taxil saw his opportunity. After making his fortune, Taxil on 1897 used his celebrity status to attract a large audience to a meeting in Paris along with the Catholic hierarchy and took great delight in telling people how he had pulled the wool over their eyes and had made a fortune in so doing. Pat Robertson in his book "A New World Order" attributes this document to Pike. It's quite evident he didn't research his work too well (or maybe his staff didn't) or was not concerned about the truth. Mr. John Robinson also speaks of how a Mason should share with his family about masonry and not exclude them. They should know Masonry is not a "Secret" organization and introduce them to fellow members. He speak of ways Lodges can go about retaining their membership and gives examples. The book is perfect read for any man about to join the Brotherhood and how he should share it with his wife as soon as he is finished.

The Builders. A Story and Study of Masonry. Joseph Fort Newton. Freemasons
The Builders. A Story and Study of Masonry. Joseph Fort Newton. Freemasons

"The Builders" by Joseph Fort Newton is my favorite Masonic book and the one I most often recommend to others.

Joseph Fort Newton's work The Builders: A Story and Study of Freemasonry, first published in 1914, is perhaps his most famous work, and is commonly regarded as a masterpiece on the subject of the spirit and history of Freemasonry. The Builders looks into the deep ancient past to glean the roots of this secretive organisation, Fort Newton looks at the Dionysian Artificers and Roman Collegia amongst others to accurately consider the roots and spirit of the movement. It also clears up some common misconceptions about the movement, by looking to the past.

The Shadow of Solomon. The Lost Secret of Freemasonry Revealed. Laurence Gardner

The Shadow of Solomon. The Lost Secret of Freemasonry Revealed. Laurence Gardner
The Shadow of Solomon. The Lost Secret of Freemasonry Revealed. Laurence Gardner

I'm reading "The Shadow of Solomon" by Laurence Gardner with an open mind. Gardner's views and books are controversial, but he was a Freemason and member under the United Grand Lodge of England for 20 years, so I'm curious about what points he decides to address.

What ancient mystery lies behind the creation of Freemasonry a lost secret so powerful that the Brotherhood itself has been on a quest to find it for three hundred years? For those of us lacking the resources to excavate occult secrets hidden beneath the Louvre or the Rosslyn Chapel, or within CIA Headquarters, The Shadow of Solomon is the next best thing. These pages reveal the true secrets of Solomon, from masonry to magic. Laurence Gardner's personal experience as both a Templar and a mason makes this fascinating journey through the history of the Bible, Knights Templar, Freemasons, and everything that followed all the more striking and immediate. Is it an accident that the world's attention should be turned to these men and their strange lexicon of symbols and secrets RIGHT NOW? What will happen when we understand that there is something we all have in common that is greater than nation or religion? Freemasons are often said to be the world's most influential secret society, yet the story of this enigmatic fraternity is wrapped in mystery and intrigue. Their involvement in shaping political world events has stretched over centuries, even to the extent that masonic principles lie beneath the establishment of the United States and its Constitution. The Shadow of Solomon is the definitive insider's account of the startling truth behind masonic history and the centurieslong search that the fraternity has undertaken to find its own lost secrets.

The Meaning of Masonry. W.L. Wilmshurst

The Meaning of Masonry. W.L. Wilmshurst. Masonic Symbolism and Philosophy
The Meaning of Masonry. W.L. Wilmshurst. Masonic Symbolism and Philosophy

The new Masonic year is right around the corner and I'm trying to put myself in a proper mindset. I figured I'd revisit one of the Classics. "The Meaning of Masonry" by W.L. Wilmshurst was one of the first books I acquired after being initiated. I wouldn't say that it's my all-time favorite Masonic book, but it's probably in the Top Ten.

The papers here collected are written solely for members of the Masonic Order, constituted under the United Grand Lodge of England. To all such they are offered in the best spirit of fraternity and goodwill and with the wish to render to the Order some small return for the profit the author has received from his association with it extending over thirty-two years. They have been written with a view to promoting the deeper understanding of the meaning of Masonry; to providing the explanation of it that one constantly hears called for and that becomes all the more necessary in view of the unprecedented increase of interest in, and membership of, the Order at the present day.

W. L. Wilmshurst's powerful vision of the rites and rituals of Freemasonry as a spiritual philosophy begins with this book. Here, Masonry is presented as "a sacramental system," represented not only by the ceremonies as experienced in the initiations, but also by an internal and mystical side, hidden behind the visible symbolism, "available only to the Mason who has learned to use his spiritual imagination and who can appreciate the reality that lies behind the veil."

Exploring the Connection Between Mormons and Masons. Matthew B. Brown. Mormonism. Freemasonry
Exploring the Connection Between Mormons and Masons. Matthew B. Brown. Mormonism. Freemasonry

"Exploring the Connection Between Mormons and Masons" by Matthew Brown is a concise and informative book. 180 pages, but half of that is endnotes.

Why did Joseph Smith become a Freemason? Who introduced Freemasonry into Nauvoo, Illinois, in the early 1840's? Do the Masons really descend from the stonemasons who built King Solomon's temple? Is there a relationship between the Masonic lodge rites and Mormon temple ordinances? The subject of Joseph Smith and Freemasonry sparks a wide range of responses among Latter-day Saints, from curiosity ot suspicion to outright excitement. In this helpful guide, trused LDS scholar Matthew B. Brown clearly and skillfully addresses the subject's history, theology, traditional understandings, and myths. Entering the upper room of Joseph Smith's red brick store, which was used as a temporary Masonic lodge room as well as a provisional temple, readers consider provocative questions as well as meaningful scriptrual patterns and interfaith connections. With research ranging from the particular to the panoramic, this volume offers engaging, edifying exploration of the relationship between the ritual practices of Freemasonary and the blessing of the House of the Lord.

The Craft. How the Freemasons Made the Modern World. John Dickie

The Craft. How the Freemasons Made the Modern World. John Dickie
The Craft. How the Freemasons Made the Modern World. John Dickie

I've had this copy of "The Craft" by John Dickie on my shelf for a couple years, probably since it was first published. I finally decided to give it a read through. I haven't found many surprises in it yet.

Insiders call it the Craft. Discover the fascinating true story of one of the most influential and misunderstood secret brotherhoods in modern society.
Founded in London in 1717 as a way of binding men in fellowship, Freemasonry proved so addictive that within two decades it had spread across the globe. Masonic influence became pervasive. Under George Washington, the Craft became a creed for the new American nation. Masonic networks held the British empire together. Under Napoleon, the Craft became a tool of authoritarianism and then a cover for revolutionary conspiracy. Both the Mormon Church and the Sicilian mafia owe their origins to Freemasonry.
Yet the Masons were as feared as they were influential. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, Freemasonry has always been a den of devil-worshippers. For Hitler, Mussolini and Franco, the Lodges spread the diseases of pacifism, socialism and Jewish influence, so had to be crushed.
Freemasonry's story yokes together Winston Churchill and Walt Disney; Wolfgang Mozart and Shaquille O'Neal; Benjamin Franklin and Buzz Aldrin; Rudyard Kipling and 'Buffalo Bill' Cody; Duke Ellington and the Duke of Wellington.
John Dickie's The Craft is an enthralling exploration of a the world's most famous and misunderstood secret brotherhood, a movement that not only helped to forge modern society, but has substantial contemporary influence, with 400,000 members in Britain, over a million in the USA, and around six million across the world.

The Freemason's Monitor. Thomas Smith Webb. Masonic Ritual. York Rite

The Freemason's Monitor. Thomas Smith Webb. Masonic Ritual. York Rite
The Freemason's Monitor. Thomas Smith Webb. Masonic Ritual. York Rite

Informative reading on a quiet evening... the Great American Masonic Monitor. Thomas Smith Webb's work examines the Craft degrees and covers the York Rite up to the Knights Templar as well.
I just gave Preston's "Illustrations of Masonry" a cover to cover read, so Webb's "Monitor" seemed a natural progression.

Thomas Smith Webb's "The Freemason's Monitor" is the grand-daddy of all U.S. Masonic monitors. This very important work includes the "Ancient Charges;" an examination of the craft degrees and lectures; funeral, installation of officers and other lodge ceremonies; a study of all York Rite bodies up to the Knights Templar, a general Masonic history section and much more. This is a fascinating and important work for all Masons. Photographic and restored reproduction of the rare 1818 edition of this work along with a contemporary foreword by Michael R. Poll.

Throwback to the late 18th Century. Some historical reading material on a quiet evening. William Preston's "Illustrations of Masonry" should be on every Mason's reading list.

In a great measure, this work explained and taught Freemasonry to Masons around the world. So popular was Preston’s “Illustrations of Masonry” (originally published in 1772) that the author saw it published in twelve editions during his lifetime, as well as being translated into several languages. This is one of the true Masonic bestselling classics. This photographic reproduction of the 1867 edition contains valuable additions by noted Masonic author George Oliver and a contemporary foreword by Michael. R. Poll.

The Perfect Ceremonies of Craft Masonry and the Holy Royal Arch. Masonic Book Club. Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC

I am, of course, accustomed to the wording of the Preston-Webb ritual used in most Jurisdictions of the United States. But, I have been enjoying this English "Emulation Lodge" ritual. Some interesting differences.

The Perfect Ceremonies of Craft Masonry and the Holy Royal Arch was the 2021 selection of the Masonic Book Club. It also features some pretty cool portraits of the editors by yours truly (Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC).

Introduction by Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC, and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC. Volume 42 of the Masonic Book Club, whose purpose is to publish classic Masonic books and support Scottish Rite, SJ, USA Philanthropies.

This is a book for the student of Masonic ritual. In 1813 the "Antients" and "Moderns" Grand Lodges merged to form the current United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). Over the next two years the new Grand Lodge worked to produce a form of ritual with elements from both groups. Although the ritual wasn't officially transcribed, the founders of the "Emulation Lodge of Improvement" were among those who witnessed the new ritual. While not used today, The Perfect Ceremonies are the lineal ancestors of the official Emulation ritual, lectures, and the installation ceremony for officers. Also included is a contemporary version of the Royal Arch Degree, which completes the "pure ancient Masonry" of the UGLE. This special printing reproduces the first editions of these works, and includes a rare insert which was privately distributed. Engravings by Hans Holbein enhance the pages.

Hardbound (5"x7"), marbled covers, satin ribbon, rubricated title pages, and index. 392 pages.
