Directed by Doug Lefler, based on the novel by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, The Last Legion (2007) is loosely based on events surrounding the 5th Century collapse of the Roman Empire. The story finds young Caesar, Romulus Augustus, fleeing Rome to seek out a last legion of supporters in Britain. Wonderful tie-ins with the Excalibur sword, Arthurian legends and mystical secret prophecies add layers of interest to the already intriguing story. Suitable attention was given to historical detail and the sets and costumes are well-conceived. Beautiful Indian actress Aishwarya Rai is lovely in a scene-stealing performance. The cast does a good job, including Colin Firth, Thomas Sangster, Kevin McKidd and Ben Kingsley as Merlin.
