The Witch: A New England Folktale (2015)

The Witch. A New England Folktale. 2015

Written and directed by Robert Eggers, The Witch: A New-England Folktale (2015) is a superb example of supernatural, psychological horror. The dark, monochromatic palette adds to the sense of fear and foreboding. In 1630 New England, a farmer, his wife and their children are banished from town and settle in the wilderness. Panic and despair envelops the family when the infant son suddenly vanishes. The family blames the oldest daughter Thomasin, who was watching the boy at the time of his disappearance. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, Thomasin is suspected of witchcraft, testing the clan's faith, loyalty and love to one another. Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie and Sarah Stephens are all great in their roles.
