The Prestige (2006): Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Magic
Co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the novel by Christopher Priest, The Prestige (2006) blends Science Fiction with the practical applications of magic in the realm of stage illusions. Set in the late 19th Century, the story centers on two feuding magicians that are obsessed with topping one another and seeking revenge after a routine illusion goes tragically wrong on stage. Full of twists, turns and dark-themed surprises, the plot remains entertaining from start to finish. Wonderful set and costume design, with attention to historical detail, add to the late Victorian-era feel. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are great as the feuding magicians. Michael Caine is wonderful as the prop engineer. Scarlett Johansson is beautiful as the magician's lovely assistant. David Bowie appears as inventor Nicola Tesla, who creates an electrical transportation device. The supporting cast is fine as well, including Rebecca Hall and Andy Serkis.
