Gangs of New York (2002): Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis

     Directed by Martin Scorsese, and inspired by Herbert Asbury's 1927 non-fiction book, Gangs of New York (2002) is set against the backdrop of the New York draft riots of 1863. The story follows crime boss and political backer, William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting and the build-up to a final battle with Amsterdam Vallon, the revenge-seeking son of an Irish Preacher whom Bill had killed in a gang fight in 1846. The story creates a stylish interpretation of mid-19th Century New York City, under the thumb of "Boss" Tweed, and dealing with an influx of Irish immigrants who were being sent off to fight in the Civil War immediately after arriving in America. Great attention to historical detail was given to both the set and costume design, adding a gritty sense of authenticity to the squalid living conditions in the Five Points area of Lower Manhattan during the 1860's. Daniel Day-Lewis is superb as Bill the Butcher. Leonardo DiCaprio is great as Amsterdam Vallon. The supporting cast does a fine job as well, including Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Henry Thomas and Brendan Gleeson.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003): Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Demi Moore

     Directed by McG, inspired by the popular 1970's television series, Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle (2003) jumped off the fast-paced momentum of the first hit film, Charlie's Angels, that had been released 2 years prior. The story finds the "Angels", a trio of beautiful private investigators who work for an elusive millionaire, tasked with finding two stolen rings that could reveal the identities of people in the Witness Protection Program before they fall into the wrong hands. One stealthy scene finds the girls sneaking into a warehouse filled with stolen art in a "Trojan Horse" style heist, concealing themselves inside a plaster sculpture and busting out at the opportune moment. High-velocity action and karate fighting mix with slapstick comedy and sexual innuendo in a good-natured mix… evident in the obvious enjoyment of the cast. Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore are beautiful, funny and agile in their reprised roles as the Angels. Demi Moore has a devious turn as a sultry and opportunistic villain. The supporting cast is good as well, including Bernie Mac, Robert Patrick, Justin Theroux and Crispin Glover.
