The Forger (2014): John Travolta, Monet and a Heist at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Directed by Philip Martin, and written by Richard D'Ovidio, The Forger (2014) has been met with mostly negative reviews. The story finds a Boston forger/thief, released early from prison to spend time with his ailing son, forced to pull off a Monet forgery and museum heist to repay the crooks that facilitated the bribe to ensure his release. Unlike most films concerning art forgery, this film gives little evidence or glimpses of the forger's abilities before his completing the fake Monet… a small detail, but it makes a difference in terms of plausibility and skill. The museum heist scene is interesting, but too brief. The plot would've benefitted if greater focus had been placed on Art Crime, and less on melodrama. On the plus side, the scenes shot inside the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston are superb, capturing many of the recognizable MFA galleries. The artist hired to capture Claude Monet's painting technique does a good job. John Travolta is good, but miscast as the forger. Christopher Plummer is wonderful and steals the show as the Irish grand dad. The supporting cast is hit or miss, including Abigail Spencer, Jennifer Ehle, The Sheridan, Victor Gojcaj and Boston comedian Steve Sweeney. The film is worthwhile for Art Crime aficionados... just fast forward to the forgery and heist scenes.

Titanic (1997): Art and Gilded Age Disaster

Written and directed by James Cameron, Titanic (1997) won 11 Academy Awards and remains one of the highest-grossing box office films of all time… surpassed only by another Cameron production, Avatar (2009). The fictional storyline finds wealthy society girl Rose DeWitt Bukater falling in love with penniless artist Jack Dawson aboard the ill-fated 1912 maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. The CGI effects and visuals are astounding, capturing the drama of the Titanic striking an iceberg and sinking: one of the most devastating tragedies in maritime history… resulting in the loss of over 1,500 people. The set design is period-appropriate, capturing the ornate fixtures and Gilded-Age elegance utilized on the costly and extravagent "Unsinkable" ship. The film has a strong art element… with Rose collecting contemporary paintings, including Waterlillies by Claude Monet, Cubist works by Pablo Picasso and Ballet Dancers by Edgar Degas. In the story, the masterworks go down with the ship. A now-famous scene involves Rose posing nude on an elegant salon sofa for one of Jack's figure drawings (James Cameron actually drew the sketch). Kate Winslet is beautiful as Rose DeWitt Bukater. Leonardo DiCaprio is skilled as artist Jack Dawson. Many of the historical passengers are depicted in the film, including The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Thomas Andrews, Captain Edward John Smith, J. Bruce Ismay, John Jacob Astor IV and Benjamin Guggenheim. The supporting cast does a wonderful job, including Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Danny Nucci, David Warner, Bill Paxton and Gloria Stuart.
